It’s amazing where inspiration can hit you from…

For me today it was an advert for a breakfast show on TV that simply said.

[Tweet “How you spend the first hour of your day often dictates how your whole day will go.”]

Now I’m sure you will agree this is not an earth shatteringly profound statement as it is something we instinctively know but it is amazing how a simple quote of truth can resonate deeply depending on where you are in life.

This was one of those moments for me.

It got me thinking, with all that we have going on in our lives, not the least of which is all the “digital” distractions – it can often feel that we are not “winning” at this game called life. We come to the end of a day and think to ourselves, ‘What was the point?’, who am I becoming or even more esoterically what is the purpose of it all?

But after seeing that breakfast show advert and hearing that quote it inspired something in me.

Focus on that 1st hour of your day – and I mean really focus on it. As if it literally has the power to turn your day around. Then when you tick off that first hour of power off your to-do list you have already started the day with a small but ever so important victory.

I mean even if all you got right was that first hour of the day, you would already be ‘winning’ especially compared to the 80% of those who don’tĀ even think about it. Not only do you get the satisfaction of having an amazing first hour, but you get that extra boost of a ‘little’ thing called momentum, which is one of the most powerful forces on the planet apart from the Creator Himself who set it up.

[Tweet “We, humans, need something to focus on, so why not FOCUS on our first hour of the day.”]

Now I will be the first to admit we won’t always get it right, (I’m writing this post in my 1st hour and have to keep stopping myself from opening new Chrome tabs or checking the BTC/USD price after the hard-fork). To be honest, though it doesn’t matter, at least beginning the habit and making progress I guarantee you will feel amazing. I hope it will be something for you that really sticks and even becomes a lifelong habit.

Just imagine how different your life would turn out then…

For you personally and where you are at in life, that first hour will have different priorities.

But for me and I’m sure this will be true for many other people who understand the power of the Spirit and being connected to your Creator I can think of no better use of that first hour than spending time with Him. From this, the very inspiration of the Divine One Himself imbues us and sets us up on a path we could not even dream of in our wildest dreams.

The scripture verse 1 Corinthians 2:9 springs to mind as I write.

No eye has seen

Sidenote: If you are a writer, just wait and see how that manuscript of yours takes shape after spending time with the Author of all authors.

So how do I want this First Hour to look?

If you are an online business owner like me, maybe a little something like below. Even if you are not at all spiritual even just reading the Psalms and Proverbs is excellent for inspiration and wisdom.

  • Jump out of bed and thank God for the day and get groomed and ready. I have an appointment and I want to be fresh.
  • Now straight to the good stuff, I sit at my desk and open up the Windows Bible App by YouVersion alongside my normal Bible. I pray a prayer welcoming God and thanking Him for who He is. I then begin reading often starting with the verse of the day and seeing where that leads. The Bible App also has some great reading plans to extend your time in the Word.
  • During this whole time, a state of prayer really ensures you get the most out of it.
  • This segues nicely into a time of inspiration maybe writing or other business tasks which are not always urgent but have a massive impact on my business goals.

I will be the first to admit that the above is not something I have done for a while but that doesn’t matter because as I am writing it I have just done it and that is a victory.

I think it’s also important to not be too rigid, on a rainy day you might want to read your Bible and pray in bed, it doesn’t matter. As the scriptures say God looks at the heart and if your priority is to connect with Him first thing, I can assure you that He will honor that and your love for Him will grow deeper.

All this sure does beat waking up immediately checking emails and my sales figures. If I can stick to the above, it will be amazing where life goes and I know it will be the same for you.
